love his character. love how the sparkle and shine in his eyes full of hope and excitement got wiped out completely in the 1st episode itself, replaced by rage and despair. if u compare his face before and after the false rape claim, u could see 2 different guys with the same hair.

Naofumi's shield has a lot of capabilities, but he can't fight in hand-to-hand combat with his shield. If he had a japanese version of Captain America in his world, he would've been an incredible, and unstoppable Shield Hero.🤩

I remember I just watched Rising of the Shield Hero 🛡 because sjws hated it but I ended up watching it cause it was an amazing show and I watched this anime 6 times going to 7 right now

Naofumi never used the slave curse on Raphtalia and Filo. The only time he used the curse was only when the girls were scared or when he couldn’t find them and worried that something would happen to them. He even told Raphtalia after the duel with the spear guy that she didn’t have to redo the slave contract tattoo thingy, it was not because that it costed a lot, but he knew that it was also uncomfortable for Raphtalia. He never did anything wrong honestly, it was the people’s fault for directly believing what B*tch and Trash said, sure they’re royalty and rule the kingdom and all, but don’t these people have brains like what kind of hero would r*pe someone or set a whole forest on fire??!! That doesn’t even make any sense and they believed B*tch and Trash right away!

I would say that if Naofumi didn't meet Raphtalia that world would be hell. Naofumi would massacre all of his foes.

Naofumi is one of my favourite characters ever, mainly because of his realistic way of living. If someone goes through this, they wouldn’t be all happy and trusting of others. I love him honestly

Shield hero is what got me back into isekai SAO runied it for me and its a welcome refreshment to see the MC not over powered and being the reverse Naofumi is a really good character and i love this series

In the light novel and manga, he is more cynical and wants Bitch and Trash dead. (Episode 21) The anime flipped it to make him seem like a good guy even though he actually is. Look at how he treated Raphtalia - he treats her like a person and honestly cares about her well-being. I cannot wait until seasons 2 and 3!

Fantastic video essay! I found this show a couple of weeks ago, and it is one of my favorites things ever. Shield Hero didn't do it! Raphtalia si Best Girl!

Consider that any other isekai protagonist would have given up, fallen into permanent despair, or committed suicide to escape their responsibilities if they were in the same position as Naofumi, yet Naofumi, either blinded by his good nature or his commitment to duty, not only continued to try and improve himself and those immediately around him, but also actively participated in fighting off the Waves, even before his name and title were cleared. Yes, his opening was tragic, but it's what he did with the tragedy and the feelings they forced on him that makes him a Hero.

The one thing about the slavery aspect is how ass backwards both fans and characters treat it. For example, the characters amd fans think slavery is wrong, but not once do they chide any person for treating demi-humans as lesser beings. Like, what the fuck? You are sickened by the fact that Naofumi owned a slave, but have no issues with Myne killing one because "it is a damned dirty demi-human." Also funny how they say slavery is NOT illegal in the nation and are generally surprised when they discover a slaved trade. Again, what? What the hell is people's logic in this world? That was one thing that always frustrated me was how bipolar everyone is. One minute they want to kill Naofumi and 5 seconds later they are like "wow, you have bad luck" only then to chide him for not just instantly forgiving them and teaming up. Naofumi was by far the most rational thinker out of the entire series. Sure, you have the Queen, Melty, and a few others, but Naofumi seems like the only one who I think gets it. Everyone I look at I am like...how can you possibly be that stupid and ignore all the obvious signs? I know most of these characters get their comeuppance down the road, but it is surprising how the characters are just so shocked by it.

tragedy is not my favorite genre, I am more into adventures and romance. I don't mind if a character suffers a tragedy as long as it helps them grow later.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Naofumi the heroic? I thought not. It's not a story the three heroes church would tell you. It's a demi-human legend. Naofumi was the shield hero, so powerful and so heroic he could use his hatred to influence the shield to deal damage… He had such a knowledge of the shield, he could even keep the ones he cared about from getting hurt. The curse series is a pathway to many shields some consider to be unholy. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing raphtalia and filo, which eventually, of course, he didn’t. Fortunately, he taught his apprentices everything he knew, then his apprentices fought for him. Ironic. He had to have others deal damage for him, despite being a cardinal hero.

You need to fix your 'a' key! Your script has misread raphtalia as "RaphAtalia" there is no fourt 'a' in between the h and the t. Drives me crazy :D The rest of the video was awesome tho :)

Naofumi is instant karma/ immediate yet compassionate justice and that’s why it’s so satisfying to watch as opposed to a wishy washy hero who keeps getting trampled on and needs saving

Tragedy can add depth to a character and a story. However, when it gets to the point that it becomes an end rather than a means, you wind up turning that character into a Gary Stu. And that's unfortunately what happens in Shield Hero. They focus so much on how unfair Naofumi's situation is and how much more he suffers than any other character that it becomes the whole point of the story.
